Company
There's more to life than just working and writing. I forgot that in the last two years.
Back in December, my sister & I exchanged Broadway show tickets for our birthday. Today's matinee of Company was initially slated for the day after Christmas but the pandemic had other plans.
I dragged out rebooking the ticket for months fearing that I would get to the theater, only for the show to be cancelled. But I was reminded that life's too short to not leave my room.
I was convinced that this day wouldn't happen. Until the lights went down and then voices echoed, Bobbie...Bobbie.
Through both masks, I silently sang along to every word as I marveled in the collective wonder of Stephen Sondheim & George Furth.
The show revolves around Bobbie as she celebrates her 35th birthday with her friends throwing a surprise party. As the show goes, she wrestles with whether or not she should be single or join those crazy people, her married friends.
It all builds up to Patti LuPone's showstopper, "The Ladies Who Lunch" and the five minute applause at the end of her performance. And the big finish, "Being Alive".
Katrina Lenk might not have been in this performance but Britney Coleman more than held her own as Bobbie.
I hadn't felt so happy all year until this afternoon. It was well worth the wait.
